Taquería El Rincón Mexicano

Uno de mis restaurantes favoritos es la Taquería El Rincón Mexicano, situado en una plaza comercial en Calle 28 entre Avenida Kalamazoo y Calle Breton. Durante mi visita reciente con mi esposo, hablé con Rina, la hermana de la propietaria, sobre la comida y el ambiente de El Rincón.

Los dueños de El Rincón son de Honduras, entonces representan comidas hondureñas en la carta, como las baleadas, pero también se ofrecen muchos platos mexicanos, como tacos, pollo asado, y chiles rellenos. La comida es auténticamente latinoamericana. ¡No es similar para nada a Taco Bell!

Porque se sirve comida tan deliciosa, El Rincón es popular para los latinos y estadounidenses por igual. Rina adivina que los porcentajes de los comensales de la Latinoamérica y de los Estados Unidos son más o menos iguales.

Mi platillo favorito en El Rincón son los camarones en mojo de ajo, pero cualquier platillo que pides, ¡casi garantizo que te gustará!

One of my favorite restaurantes is the Taquería El Rincón Mexicano, located in a strip mall off of 28th Street between Kalamazoo Avenue and Breton Road. During my recent visit there with my husband, I spoke with Rina, the sister of the owner, about the food and atmosphere of El Rincón.

The owners of El Rincón are from Honduras, so they feature Honduran foods on the menu, such as the baleadas, but they also offer many Mexican dishes, such as tacos, pollo asado (roasted chicken), and chiles rellenos (stuffed peppers). The food is authentically Latin American. It’s not at all like Taco Bell!

Because the serve such delicious food, El Rincón is popular with Latinos and non-Latinos alike. Rina estimates that the percentages of Latin American diners and United States diners are more or less the same.

My favorite dish at El Rincón is the camarones en mojo de ajo, or shrimp in garlic sauce. Whatever dish you choose, though, I almost guarantee that you’ll enjoy it!

Kelloggsville Christian Reformed Church

Este domingo fui a un estudio de la Biblia en Kelloggsville Christian Reformed Church, el primer lugar en mi travesía de explorar la diversidad de la comunidad latina de West Michigan. Kelloggsville CRC tiene servicios múltiples, pero el servicio bilingüe es a las 5:30 de la tarde, tras lo cual se sirve una cena. El servicio fue buenísimo, con algunos minutos de canto, un sermón por Jose Macias, un estudio de Biblia en grupitos, y después de una oración comimos una cena de albóndigas, arroz con verduras, papas asadas, ensalada, y fruta. Todas las personas allí eran muy simpáticas y amables, y personas de todos ámbitos de la vida asisten.

El lunes antes de entonces, tuve una entrevista con el Reverendo Macias y Melanie Doezema, la empleada administrativa. La Sra. Doezema me dijo que la iglesia tiene cuatro metas: hacer conexiones entre el alma y Dios, las personas en la comunidad, los dones de la iglesia, y la fe en la vida. Estas metas se cumplen gracias a los servicios, los estudios de la Biblia, los programas educativos para todas edades, eventos (como días de campo) para la comunidad, y la generosidad.

La iglesia tiene una asistencia típica de 30% de personas no caucásicas. Aunque muchos de la población latina de este 30% son mexicanos, hay diversidad allí con guatemaltecos, dominicanos, salvadoreños, y peruanos. Muchos son inmigrantes de la primera generación o son jóvenes que están aquí por Bethany Christian Services, entonces la iglesia ha aprendido cómo proveer servicios que pueden ayudarles a crear una comunidad diversa en ella misma.

Kelloggvsille CRC es una iglesia diversa, contemporánea, y de bienvenida. Sin embargo, si todavía no estás seguro si querrías asistir a un servicio, escucha el consejo de Sra. Doezema: ¡Kelloggsville CRC provee café bueno!

This past Sunday I went to a Bible study at Kelloggsville Christian Reformed Church, the first place on my journey of exploring the diverse Hispanic community of West Michigan. Kelloggsville CRC has multiple services, but the bilingual service is at 5:30 in the evening, after which a dinner is served. The service was great, with several minutes of singing, a sermon by Reverend Jose Macias, a small-group Bible study, and after the final prayer we had a dinner of meatballs, rice with vegetables, roasted potatoes, salad, and fruit. I found that everyone at the church is friendly and kind, and people from all walks of life attend.

On the Monday before the service, I had an interview with Reverend Macias and Melanie Doezema, the administrative assistant for the church. Mrs. Doezema told me that the church has four missions: making connections from the heart to God, the people to the community, gifts to the ministry, and from faith to life. These goals are carried out by the worship services, Bible studies, educational programs for all ages, events (such as picnics) for the whole community, and benevolences.

The church has a regular attendance of approximately 30% of non-Caucasian people. Even though much of Hispanic sector of this 30% consists of Mexicans, there is diversity here as well, such as Guatemalans, Dominicans, Salvadorans, and Peruvians. Many are first-generation immigrants or youths who have come through Bethany Christian Services, so the church has learned what kinds of services to provide so that they can help create a diverse community within itself.

Kelloggsville CRC is a welcoming and diverse contemporary church. However, if you still aren’t sure that you would like to attend a service or two, take Mrs. Doezema’s advice: Kelloggsville CRC has good coffee!
