Para graduarse del Grand Valley State University Honors Program, es un requisito para cada estudiante completar el Honors Senior Project, un curso final que se realiza individualmente con la ayuda de un profesor consejero. Puede ser cualquier proyecto que el estudiante desee, como investigaciones científicas, una tesis en un tópico que le interese al estudiante, un proyecto creativo--¡Cualquier propuesta en tanto satisfaga el criterio del Honors Program! Para mi proyecto, he decidido crear un blog que enfoque en la comunidad hispana de Grand Rapids y West Michigan.
Mi meta primaria al cumplir este proyecto es recalcar la rica variedad de las culturas hispanas representadas en Grand Rapids y West Michigan en total. Para cumplir con este objetivo, debía crear una conexión entre la comunidad del Programa de Español de GVSU y la comunidad hispana.
Adicionalmente, mi experiencia es que no hay muchos sitios web que expliquen bien las empresas, los eventos, y las organizaciones que apoyan a la comunidad hispana. Los sitios web que sí hacen eso frecuentemente proveen escasa información sobre estos eventos y lugares. Tampoco muestran el ambiente de estos eventos y lugares, ni la experiencia de participar en ellos. Espero que yo haya podido presentar una imagen precisa y respetuosa de la cultura de estos grupos.
Finalmente, un problema común al estudiar y aprender una lengua extranjera es la ansiedad. Un artículo publicado en 1986 dice que los estudiantes de una lengua extranjera “experience apprehension, worry,(…) difficulty concentrating, [forgetfulness],” [experimentan aprensión, preocupación,(…) dificultad en concentrarse, falta de memoria] y más (E. Horwitz, M. Horwitz, y Cope 126). Quiero desarrollar un recurso para los estudiantes para que puedan ver las experiencias de una persona con experiencias similares, y con esto quiero ojalá pueda ayudarlos a ganar confianza y seguridad en sus estudios y estar más cómodos al explorar su comunidad.

It can be pretty much anything that the student wants it to be, such as scientific research, a thesis on a chosen topic, a creative project--anything as long as it fits the criteria of the Honors Program! For my project, I have decided to create a blog that focuses on the Hispanic community of Grand Rapids and West Michigan.
My main goal in undergoing this project is to highlight rich variety of Hispanic cultures represented in Grand Rapids and West Michigan as a whole. In doing this I hope to create a connection between the GVSU Spanish program community and the Hispanic community.
Additionally, in my experience there are not many websites that explain well the busineses, events, and organizations of the community. The websites that do exist frequently provide little more than blurbs about the events and places that they focus on. This doesn’t give an adequate picture of what it’s actually like to participate. I hope to give the accurate, respectful “inside scoop” into the culture of such places.
Finally, a common problem within the second language-learning community is anxiety. A journal article published in 1986 states that students of foreign language “experience apprehension, worry, (…) difficulty concentrating, [forgetfulness],” and more (E. Horwitz, M. Horwitz, and Cope 126). My hope is to develop a way for the students to see the experiences of someone in their shoes so that they gain more confidence in their own learning and that they will feel a bit more relaxed in exploring their community.
