¡Hola! Me llamo Sarah Tafelsky. Estoy en mi cuarto año en Grand Valley State University con una especialización en Estudios Liberales y una subespecialización en Español.
Mi interés por la lengua española empezó en la escuela secundaria, cuando tuve que tomar clases de español como parte del currículo. Lo aprendí rápidamente, sin embargo, y aún después de tomar un descanso en su estudio durante mis años finales del colegio y mi primer año de la universidad, todavía lo recordaba bastante, por lo que regresar a estudiarlo no fue muy difícil. No es una sorpresa que me haya acoplado al español porque mi papá también es un políglota. Especialmente me interesa en la sociolingüística, o cómo el lenguaje y la cultura interaccionan y se determinan. El lenguaje moldea el modo en el que los seres humanos pensamos, nuestros puntos de vista, y aún es una imagen del contacto entre las culturas. Ojalá aprenda más sobre el idioma español en un futuro cercano, especialmente con respecto a cómo se formó y cómo ha cambiado por las interacciones con otras lenguas, a lo largo del tiempo.
En mis tiempos libres, disfruto de pasar tiempo con mi esposo y nuestros cinco gatos, además de coser y tejer. Ojalá pueda graduarme en diciembre del 2015. Me siento muy emocionada al pensarlo...

Hi! My name is Sarah Tafelsky. I’m a Senior at Grand Valley State University, majoring in Liberal Studies and minoring in Spanish.
My interest in the Spanish language began in middle school, when I was obligatorily introduced to the language as part of the curriculum. I picked up on it quickly, however, and even after taking a break from Spanish during my last couple years of high school and my first year of college, I still retained enough of it that returning to Spanish-language classrooms was not at all difficult. It’s really not a surprise that I have taken to learning a foreign language, as my dad is quite the linguist himself. I’m especially interested in sociolinguistics, or how language and culture interact to shape one another. Language shapes the way we think, the way we view the world, and is even a display of cultural contact! I hope to learn more about the Spanish language in the near future, especially in regards to how it was formed and changed by interactions with other languages.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending lots of time with my husband and our five cats, as well as sewing and knitting. I hope to graduate from GVSU in December 2015, and I’m very excited to do so!
