Mi entrada previa sobre el Latino Community Coalition enfocó en mis propias experiencias en una de las reuniones mensuales, pero después de hablar con Paola Mendivil, la secretaria del LCC, sentí que necesitaba una entrada más para elaborar lo que hace el LCC exactamente.
En aproximadamente el año 2005, un grupo de personas sintió la necesidad de compartir los recursos disponibles para la comunidad; y con el tiempo este grupo se ha convertido en la organización conocida como Latino Community Coalition, con sus reuniones mensuales. Desde entonces, el LCC ha mantenido su meta de:
“Establecer una red cooperativa entre organizaciones privadas y comunitarias que proveen servicios a la población latina de Kent County para hacerlos más accesibles y efectivos para personas y familias.” [traducido]
Aunque LCC no ofrece ningún servicio a la comunidad, sí ofrece muchas oportunidades de contactar con otros, como los de organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, negocios, escuelas y universidades, y más. Las reuniones también proveen una avenida donde compartir información sobre eventos, oportunidades del empleo, y asuntos pertinentes a la comunidad (como los del salud, educación, inmigración, etc.). Además, el anfitrión de cada reunión tiene la oportunidad a hablar sobre las metas y los trabajos de su organización, que siempre son interesantes porque el lugar de la reunión cambia cada mes. LCC también tiene un página en Facebook para las personas que quieran contactar con otros fuera de las reuniones.
Los estudiantes pueden ayudar a esta organización al asistir a las reuniones y contactar con otros. De hecho, ¡así es cómo encontré mis prácticas con el Hispanic Center of Western Michigan! También pueden buscar oportunidades de liderazgo a través de LCC, que por turno puede ayudar a los estudiantes a ganar experiencia inestimable con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro.
En el futuro, LCC desea ofrecer servicios para apoyar a la comunidad y no simplemente a los que asisten a las reuniones. En este momento están en proceso de desarrollo por el Steering Committee, un grupo de diez personas con LCC, ¡entonces ojalá que muy pronto podamos conocer las nuevas propuestas de esta organización!

My previous post about the Latino Community Coalition focused on my personal experiences at one of their monthly meetings, but after speaking with Paola Mendivil, the LCC’s secretary, I felt that one more post was needed to elaborate on what they LCC does for the community.
In approximately the year 2005, a group of people felt the need to share the resources available to them and the community, as well as network with others, and over time this morphed into the organization known as the Latino Community Coalition and its monthly-held meetings. The LCC has since maintained its mission to:
“establish a cooperative network among private and community organizations that provides services to the Latino population of Kent County in order to make them more accessible and effective to people and families.”
While the LCC does not provide any services to the community, it does offer an invaluable opportunity to network with others, such as those from non-profits, businesses, schools and universities, and more. The meetings also provide an avenue for sharing information on events, employment opportunities, and pertinent issues to the community (health, education, immigration, etc.). In addition to this, the host of each meeting is given the opportunity to discuss his or her organization’s mission, which always proves to be interesting since the location of the meeting changes each month. The LCC also has a Facebook page for those looking to network outside of the monthly meetings.
Students can help within this organization by going to the meetings and networking with the others. In fact, this is exactly how I found my internship with the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan! Students can also inquire about leadership positions available within the LCC, which in turn can help students gain invaluable experience within non-profits.
In the future, the LCC hopes to offer services to assist the community and not just those attending the meetings. It is currently in development by the Steering Committee, a group of ten people within the LCC, so hopefully soon we will begin to see even bigger and better things from this organization!
